SPRING SYMPOSIUM '17
JUNIPER BONSAI FEATURING WILLIAM N. VALAVANIS
Members of the juniper family are one of the most popular species for bonsai use because of their adaptability to various growing conditions, wood which can be styled easily, and decay resistant wood for great deadwood sculpting. Saturday's offerings will be a morning presentation on the juniper family, followed by an afternoon design workshop using excellent Kishu juniper material for each participant. Kishu juniper is a variety with fine foliage often grafted onto large juniper trunks to replace coarse foliage. Kishu has a tight growth habit which is excellent for small bonsai. These pre-bonsai Kishu junipers are quite bushy and can be easily pruned, wired and shaped into impressive bonsai. With Bill's assistance, workshop participants will create and take home their own small bonsai using the Kishu material. Please bring your own tools and wire for the afternoon workshop. No potting will be done. All registrants are welcome as silent observers in the afternoon workshop for a small additional fee. An additional fee will be charged for active participants in the workshop. The presentations and workshop will be inspirational to the expert but not intimidating to the beginner. Members are encouraged to bring a tree for exhibit.
Bill is one of the most effective and enthusiastic bonsai teachers in the world today. Don't miss this opportunity to study with him. The public is welcome at all events. Registration fee(s) are charged to defray costs of Spring '17. All proceeds support this and other CVBS events.
